How Introverts Can Impress in Interviews

How Introverts Can Impress in Interviews Most people don’t associate introverts with the idea of attention-grabbing impact and unforgettable first impressions. There’s a good reason for that: Whilst introverts are quite capable of being socially ‘noisy’ when comfortable, they tend to react to new situations by carefully processing stimuli mentally, before delivering a response. It is not that introverts are shy (that’s a different thing) but that they are thoughtful. Put this into a job interview situation and it can at first appear troubling. However adept you may be at the tasks for which you’re being assessed, you can’t get past the fact that interviewers will (unconsciously) base much of their decision on the impact you make in the first few moments after meeting them. But it is not as though being an introvert makes you incapable of making an impression. Rather, it means you need to tailor your approach to make the best use of the unique skills and traits that make you the kind of person you are. It also means taking some more general steps to ensure you are as prepared as possible for the particular trials of the job interview process. Heres how: Make sure to take plenty of time before the interview to get yourself into the right physical and mental state to excel. Take the morning off work if you can, to do some extra last minute research and preparation. But also concentrate on staying calm and upbeat. Try doing some yoga or going for some tea and cake before the interview. And make sure that you know exactly where you’re going, and how to get there, so that you are not flustered when you arrive. Think also beyond the job, to the human connection that you need to make. While extroverts connect with groups of people, introverts tend to engage with others one-to-one. That means that when you arrive, greeting a panel of 3 or 4 people may throw you immediately out of your comfort zone. So instead, don’t think of them as a panel. Take time to make eye contact with each person individually as you say hello.  It’s also good to prepare some small talk in advance so that you are not immediately plunged into an awkward silence. You can mention something about your journey, or an element of your surroundings that impresses you. Remember, while you might not always have an answer on hand â€" most introverts take a little while longer to form a response they’re happy with â€" asking a question is a great way to break a silence and show that you are interested and engaged with those around you. Importantly, you want to communicate the fact that you are a thoughtful, considered, engaged individual and that you have a host of proud achievements and skills that you can bring to the job. Once you get past the greeting stage, you may be asked to talk about your accomplishments. This is another chance to wow the panel, but naturally you may be inexperienced at ‘showing off’. The idea of bragging makes you feel uncomfortable. Instead, try framing your achievements in terms of what you learned from the experience of completing them. Put your successes in the context of what you could achieve for this new company. And talk about how you’d like to build on these accomplishments in the future. This infographic by  CashNetUSA provides a full rundown on how an introvert can make a great first impression at a job interview, and sustain that good start throughout the whole process. Run through it point-by-point, using that  attention to detail for which introverts are justly famed, and you’ll be ready to wow your next interview panel in your own unique way.

Online Professional Resume Writing Services

Online Professional Resume Writing ServicesMany online professional resume writing services Calgary offer the opportunity to communicate directly with the writer. Through the process of conversation, a mutual understanding can begin to form between the two parties. While this is not a requirement for all services, it does offer a great opportunity for you to get a feel for what to expect in the type of person that you are speaking with, before you get into a formal format. While that may not be something that you are likely to encounter on a regular basis, it can provide a way for you to get a feel for the people behind the services that you are considering. However, if you are looking for a more formal format, Calgary will offer a great variety of options that can help you express yourself more clearly. For example, many online services in Calgary offer essay or resume examples that can be read out loud. While this may seem like an odd choice, some of the more traditional online serv ices also offer voice activation software. This is a great option for those who do not have the ability to write using their voice, but find that they cannot take part in the conversation and want to be able to speak with a voice actor.Of course, the most common option available to those looking for online professional resume writing services Calgary is simply to send a formal or informal resume or CV. When sending a formal resume or CV, be sure to keep in mind the common formatting guidelines. Keep it as formal as possible, while still being concise. Try to keep it simple, but not too plain. Any errors you make are more than likely going to be caught by your automated system as you send it, so be sure to be as accurate as possible.Likewise, when sending a more informal style document, take the time to think about how the writing should be formatted and decide on a style that best suits your needs. While Calgary does not offer specific guidelines as to how you should format a resume , there are several common conventions that you can follow. First, use the first line of the resume as the subject line. When putting your name, use a headline that clearly outlines who you are and why you are a great candidate for the position. When it comes to heading your resume, however, try to avoid using a heading that includes a space, since it is impossible to use the space to insert a bio. Instead, use the first word of the resume's heading. Also, avoid using bullet points, since the summary portion of the document should stand alone and carry the entire weight of the resume. When creating your professional resume, you will find that some services will take the time to show you how to build your resume. Others will create it for you, offering suggestions that should give you ideas for adding to your document. Be sure to check out these services carefully, as you may find that a couple of them will offer you a great deal, which might include the chance to view examples of thei r work, prior to completing your own resume. As with any other document, online professional resume writing services Calgary will likely be eager to accept your submissions. It is important, however, to remember that each submission should be checked for spelling and grammar, as well as checking for punctuation. In addition, be sure to proofread and edit as you go, rather than jumping into a document with little thought as to how it will affect the reader. Also, be sure to complete a contact form with each submission that will allow you to receive a response in a timely manner.Because of the number of services available online, it is often wise to take the time to review each application that you receive, to ensure that the person behind the service is the right one for you. With careful attention to the basics, you should be able to land a number of online services in Calgary that can quickly submit a resume orCV for you.

Goodie Goodie Gumdrops! A Goodie Box Review

Goodie Goodie Gumdrops! A Goodie Box Review From time to time the Ms.Careergirl Columnists receive offers to review products. Luckily for me, I was chosen as a Goodie Box reviewer and my package arrived days before an upcoming work trip. Here is what came inside and what I thought! Beanitos Black Bean Chips Pass the salsa! Great with salsa as an appetizer or healthy snack, they were not as hard or crunchy as corn-based chips so mentally, you want to prepare for this differentiation. Packed with flavor, these trans-fat-free chips were still salty enough for a sodium-craving runner like me and make for a healthy swap at your next football party. Link Van Holtens Pickle-Ice Speaking of salt, triathletes and maybe expecting mothers need to check out Van Holtens Pickle-Ice. I know, #PICKLEPOP sounds gross but I tried it after a grueling workout and was pleasantly surprised by the picksicle’s flavor and grateful for the electrolytes it promised to provide. Link Navitas Naturals Hemp Peanut Bar Cacao Cranberry Bar I know, I know, bars are not “real food”. But if it was between one of these bars and a snickers, it would depend on how hungry I was. JK, I would obviously pick this certified organic, plant-based, superfood-loaded bar! For when you’re traveling and don’t have a full kitchen, this is one of the healthier bars I have seen. The Hemp Peanut had just the right amount of sweet/salt taste and if given the choice again, I would pick this over the Cacao Cran option. Anything peanut butter-y always wins. Link Link Justin’s Honey Peanut Butter + Banana Chips This was my favorite thing in the box. (See above peanut butter FTW reference). The honey peanut butter was a bit stiff so some of the banana chips cracked on contact but that didn’t matter! I had just traveled for 6 hours and there was an adorable single serving of honey peanut butter in the palm my hand, no complaints. Link Gutsy Products Chewy Citrus Flavor I have an iron stomach and so have yet to crack these Flintstone-vitamins looking tablets for GI distress. Here is what I found out about them: a Cleveland Clinic trained gastroenterologist and Harvard trained dentist has treated thousands of patients with digestive disorders and a common concern patients present at his office is gastrointestinal distress. These all natural products promote oral and digestive health with a proprietary blend of nature’s remedies: papain (papaya), licorice root and apple cider vinegar (GiGs ®). Fast-acting Gutsy Chewyâ„¢ is gluten free, lactose free and vegan friendly. Use it to help eliminate that queasy, uneasy, refluxy feeling  with GutBurnâ„¢ and GutBloatâ„¢ after eating. I think I need to eat more wings or go heavier on the hot sauce to have the need for this. Link Q Drinks Q Ginger Beer Calling all Moscow mule lovers, you know who you are, it’s time to get fancy. This essential non-alcoholic mixer packs an extra big ginger punch that is clean and crisp without being too sweet. It’s made with REAL ginger, organic agave, a touch of coriander, cardamom, and lime. Cheers. Link Natralia Anti-itch Soothing Cream Oh, Natralia, where were you when my feet, although in fabulous strappy summer sandals, were ravaged by mosquitoes on a warm August evening this past summer? This anti-itch Soothing Cream is a cortisone-free alternative made with natural colloidal oatmeal and menthol to relieve itchy and dry skin. (mmmmm colloidal oatmeal). Anyway, used to calm irritation caused by insect bites (they love me, I’m just so sweet, or it’s the wine, idk), sunburn, poison oak, ivy, and sumac, and eczema, it has been clinically proven to work faster and better than anti-histamine gel. Beautiful autumn weather in Milwaukee = mosquito risk winding down. I won’t need it in WI for a while.  But will definitely be packing this relief for my next warm weather getaway. Link Nootrobox Chewable Coffee Cubes Warning! Very strong coffee taste! If you like the aroma, temperature, and experience of drinking coffee, I recommend keep doing that and skip on these potent coffee cubes! I would recommend for endurance athletes/those who do not have access to coffee or starbys. Link Hampton Creek Just Mayo Tell my old trainer in FL that said no mayo that I could probably get back with mayo! This tasted like the real deal. This Non-GMO; Cholesterol-free; Vegan; Egg-free; Dairy-free; Soy-free; Lactose-free; Gluten-free; Kosher; No artificial colors or flavors product was a treat when paired with my on-the-go lunch of leftover grilled chicken breast and ½ sweet potato.  Link JJ’s Sweets Cocomels Coconut Milk Caramels Remember those classic caramels in different colored wax paper you had when you were a kid? They are all grown up now. And ideal for satisfying an after-dinner sweet tooth (not like I know about that or anything). Blissful Cocomels also include  the many benefits of coconut oil and are organic, vegan, gluten free, corn syrup free, soy free and Non GMO. JJ is not JK, these were yummy! Link

10 Essential Ways Being More Positive Enhances Your Career and Your Life - Kathy Caprino

10 Essential Ways Being More Positive Enhances Your Career and Your Life As a trained marriage and family therapist and career coach, I’ve researched for over 13 years what makes some people highly successful interpersonally and in business, and others doomed to fail. I’ve observed this: Being more positive and uplifting in your behaviors and language makes room for far greater success, satisfaction and reward in your life (this goes for your marriage and family life too). How do we become more positive? Its an extremely important question and it involves a myriad of decisions, behaviors and commitments. Its about strengthening your boundaries, shifting your mindset, being very careful about every word you utter, moving away from negative people, and more. In short, theres not a one-step-cure for this its a journey and a lifelong commitment to a series of behaviors. Also, its about cultivating positive thinking as a habit. In Marriage as In Life and Work During my therapy training, I read a fascinating book called The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.   In it, the author, leading relationship expert Dr. John Gottman, explains that there are particular types of negative interactions that, if allowed to run rampant, are so lethal to a relationship that he calls them the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.   These four horsemen “clip-clop into the heart of a marriage in the following order: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling.” I’ve seen these exact same harbingers of professional disaster in the workplace as well. Allowed to run unfettered, these Four Horsemen will certainly clip-clop into the heart of your career and professional life with a deadly thud. Dr. Gottman discovered a formula he believes is provable and reliable â€" that to make your marriage successful, you must ensure that there are five times more positive, loving interactions than negative, painful interactions between you and your spouse. If you don’t adhere to this formula, serious unhappiness ensues.   And if you dip toward the 1:1 ratio consistently, he says you’re likely to end in divorce.   He can watch a couple discuss a problem or conflict for only a few minutes, and predict with eerie accuracy if they’ll eventually end in divorce. Interestingly, I’ve seen the relevance of this positive-to-negative interaction formula in people’s careers and professional endeavors as well. Those who are consistently more negative than positive in their communications and interactions suffer from an untimely demise of their career potential. Why is Negativity So Destructive?   Negativity limits, constrains and tears down.   Negativity also tends to escalate, and as it does, it strips away future opportunities for success, self-esteem, trust, confidence, and growth. What Does Positivity Do Instead? Being positive, on the other hand, has the opposite effect â€" it builds, repairs, and protects. Using positive language and behaviors builds up support structures and creates new roads to solutions and success. It paves the way for a deeper level of human connection, compassion, and creativity. In fact, I’ve found that concentrating your focus on being more positive as you engage in your professional endeavors achieves the following 10 powerful outcomes: Being more positive: 1) Helps you engage with others more effectively and gain support more easily for your ideas and initiatives 2) Develops you as a role model and someone to “watch,” admire and learn from 3) Gives you greater positive impact and influence on your culture, your environment and your colleagues (positive language and emotion are magnets) 4) Boosts your “immunity” to negative outside occurrences  â€" you become more resilient and bounce back quicker 5) Inspires others around you to find the courage to seek and move toward the positive 6) Strengthens your ability to advocate effectively for yourself and others,   which in turn attracts more opportunity for all involved 7) Paves the way for more collaborative success rather than crushing competition 8) Builds your reputation as someone worthy of trust and support 9) Helps you see possibility where others see only hopelessness 10) Brings to light your achievements and accomplishments rather than highlighting your failures In the end, positivity paves the way for growth, and growth breeds success.   You might be thinking, “Sure, I know being positive is important, but I can’t seem to shift myself out of my negative thinking, especially with all this bad news around us today.” If this sounds like you, I’d ask you to think again.   We CAN change and modify â€" it’s called evolving.   We ARE able to shift ourselves away from negative, destructive and damaging negative patterns to more positive ones â€" in our relationships and in our work.   I know, because I’ve worked extremely hard to create these shifts in myself and in my career, and worked with hundreds of others do the same, to great success. If you will make the commitment today to engage in more positive behaviors and thoughts in your life and work, I know you won’t regret it. Your challenge: This week, take a very close look at your communications and interactions at work.   What is the ratio of your positive communications to negative ones?   If the ratio is at least 5 (positive) to 1 (negative), kudos to you!   If not, there’s some important work to be done. To learn how to become more positive and build stronger boundaries to separate from negative people, work with Kathy in her new Close Your Power Gaps coaching program and tune into her weekly podcast Finding Brave.

5 Resources for Visual Resumes - CareerAlley

5 Resources for Visual Resumes - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. The job hunting world is continually changing, driven primarily by advancements in technology and leveraging the Internet. Weve seen the world of snail mail and pounding the pavement replaced by emails, job boards and hundreds of job posting sites. Visual Resumes hit the scene a few years ago and, while not being an instant hit, have started to become popular. This relatively new twist on job search is still in its infancy and its not clear yet how popular this trend will become, but time will tell. So what is a visual resume? It is an online professional marketing brochure or personal web-based brand. Rather than sending your Word or text resume to potential employers, you would direct them to your web-based resume. This is a new wild card and those who are creative are likely to create the most eye catching resumes. Its all about what you can do to have your resume stand out from the rest. For those who are ready to give this a try, there are a few of options available. Vizualize.me This site allows you to create an infographic resume. You can sign-up for free using your email account or your LinkedIn account. The site strives to be easy to use, pulling all of your data from LinkedIn. You can add, delete and change information easily. When I tried it (pulling in my LinkedIn info), it took less than 30 seconds to create the first view. LinkedIn recommendations look great and there are a bunch of tools on the left hand side so you can make tweaks to your resume. Once your resume is done, the dashboard will give you key stats like views and popularity. VisualCV We cant cover this topic without reviewing VisualcCV.com which, as best I can tell, is the best known visual resume site. The site offers a tour as well as examples. The tour gives an overview of how to create your visual resume and what is generally included. You can embed almost any type of media as well as hyperlinks to your personal website or social site profile (like LinkedIn). The service is free. It is worth looking at the examples before creating your own visual resume as they will give you some ideas as to what might work best for you. Re.vu This site helps you create an infographic resume which is a pictorial of your career and skills. It can pull data directly from your LinkedIn account or you can add the information yourself. You can create a custom profile as well. Visual.ly by Kelly This site provides an alternative way to create a visual resume. Basically, you create a visual resume using slideshare.net and use this site to embed your virtual resume. Since Ning.com enables the creation of your own social network, my assumption is that this site will become a repository for visual resumes and another visual resume alternative. Resumup This site has several resume formats: Regular text resume, ATS (can be easily read by a computer) and a visual (infographic) resume. We will focus on the infographic resumes. As with some of the other sites, you can sign in using Facebook, LinkedIn or the standard email address and password. Sign-up is quick and easy. Each section of the infographic resume can be edited. The format is very appealing and editing each section (such as achievements, identity, skills, etc. The quality of the final product depends on how much time you spend in creating your resume. Canva Basically,Canva is a simple, drag-and-drop, design software thats completely online and free to use. This is a great resource to use for your visual resume. It gives you everything you need to easily turn ideas into stunning designs. Create designs for Web or print: blog graphics, presentations, Facebook covers, flyers, posters, invitations and so much more. Theyvebeen around for just over 2 years and already have 8.1 million users. Take a look at The Infographic Resume: How to Create a Visual Portfolio that Showcases Your Skills and Lands the Job. This is a book by Hannah Morgan (the founder of careersherpa.net) In my opinion, VisualCV has the edge (by a long shot) on visual resumes. There do not seem to be too many alternatives (at least I could not find many) and the format and tools in VisualCV are superior to the other options. We are always eager to hear from our readers.
